Our partnership

Offshore wind developer Deep Wind Offshore and Renewables energy major EDF Renewables have been working closely together in Norway since 2021. The work includes delivering a competitive bid for the Utsira Nord tender.

Plans for 2025

The consortium has signed an agreement to explore the terms for cooperation for the 2025 tenders. The partnership combines global renewables expertise with 100 years of Norwegian power generation and extensive experience in offshore and maritime operations.

The project

The Olof Skötkonung offshore wind farm is expected to produce up to 7,5 TWh of renewable electricity, corresponding to the combined electricity consumption of Gävleborg and Uppsala counties in 2021.

Sustainability and nature

Deep Wind Offshore and EDF Renewables are committed to a sustainable development of the Utsira Nord field.

We are committed to prioritise the environment and developing Utsira Nord in a sustainable way. We have deep experience in environmental surveying, safeguarding and monitoring and have already begun work to understand the environmental conditions on-site.

Through regular dialogue and input meetings with local fishermen and their organisations since 2020, the consortium has addressed opportunities and potential issues related to the Utsira Nord project.
In collaboration with the Norwegian tech company Spoor, the consortium has detected and tracked birds by the Utsira Nord site. Spoors AI technology and camera has been measuring from the lighthouse on Utsira, providing new observations of species and contributing to increased knowledge. Read more in the report below.
The consortium is working with NINA as part of the VisAvis project to map bird migration pathways across Norway. Read more at: VisAviS
EDF Renewables is working as part of a joint industry project to develop new methods to survey and monitor marine megafauna through the OWFSOMM (france-energies-marines.org)
EDF Renewables is developing new eDNA survey techniques to improve environmental surveillance at its Blyth Offshore Demonstrator project.

Supply chain

The Project commits to kick-starting the Norwegian offshore wind supply chain industry. Engagement with businesses locally and throughout Norway is ongoing to raise awareness and preparedness for domestic and international opportunities.

We are looking to work with local businesses on innovative and sustainable solutions.

Roadshows along the west coast and supplier meetings

The consortium has arranged open supplier meetings and contributed to several external supplier events to highlight opportunities related to the Utsira North project.
Moreld Ocean Wind preferred supplier for floater concept

The consortium is cooperating with Norwegian supplier Moreld Ocean Wind for the floating solution at the offshore wind development on Utsira Nord.
Collaboration with Karmsund Havn and Westcon

The consortium collaborates with Westcon Yards and Karmsund Havn to explore areas for construction, assembly and logistics for the development of Utsira Nord.

Local community

The consortium actively collaborates with local communities, schools, universities and suppliers to develop expertise and share knowledge.

The project will contribute to create lifelong careers and high-quality green jobs in the region.

With Høgskolen på Vestlandet and several local suppliers in Haugesund, Deep Wind Offshore has established an educational programme in offshore wind. The first course started in January 2024, with a high number of participants from both the industry, public sector and academia.
EDF Renewable’s won the ‘Offshore UK Energy Skills Award’ at the Global Offshore Awards in 2022 for its work developing the 2 year “Destination Renewables” course with Pembrokeshire College to prepare students to enter the renewables job market.
The consortium has involved summer students and master's students in our Utsira Nord-project. Since 2021 the consortium has organised several meetings and events where the students presented their assignments to the municipality and local community on Utsira.
Offshorewind4kids: The consortium has organised educational activities for children on Karmøy and Utsira and taught them how to build their own wind turbines.

Our experience

EDF Renewables’ first three offshore wind farms in France enabled the creation of 7,000 local jobs.

EDF Renewables has developed and built the worlds first commercial floating offshore wind farm using Tension Leg Platform foundations at Provence Grand Large near Marseille in France. Three Siemens Gamesa 8,4 MW turbines are installed on floaters designed, developed and installed by SBM Offshore and IFP Energies Nouvelles.  
EDF Renewables build the worlds first gravity based foundations on its Blyth Offshore Demonstrator project in the UK. The company used this experience to deploy the concept on a large scale at its 500 MW wind farm at Fecamp, near Dieppe in France.
